We always hear about internet hackers in the news. There hundreds of cases of internet hacking that gets us scared. We read about celebrities having their photos and videos leaked over the internet. Companies having their customers’ data stolen. And many others. Let’s take a look at who and what they truly are…

Definition of Hacker

A hacker is a skilled computer expert that has a high technical knowledge that can change computer codes undetected. For common people when they hear the word “hacker” it means it is an internet criminal who breaks into government intelligence files or steal people’s identities and credit card information.

Types of Hackers

There are three types of hackers depending on their intentions in breaking into computer systems.

White Hat Hackers

They are the company employees that test the security system of their computer to know if they have a firm security. They do these by breaking into their system. They are commonly known as non-malicious hackers.

Black hat hackers/crackers

Now, this type of hackers is malicious. They are also known as crackers by some. They break into the system to get information of the people and steal their identities. Sometimes they also vandalized the system. These are the hackers that can be called as internet criminals.

Gray hat hackers

Gray hat hackers are in between white hat hackers and black hat hackers. They act illegally sometimes. The best example for this type of hacker are the ones in the repair shop. They will enter into the system without the owner’s authorization in order to put vulnerabilities in the system. They will gain more money from it.

The term hacker before in 70’s and 80’s means visionary programmer that has the passion for creating new programs and systems for the computer. Many successful known people like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates are hackers when they are young. Today the term hacker is describing a person that enters the system and works with codes.
