A New Alphabet? It’s Google’s New Holding Company

We live in the age of the Google. About two-thirds of Internet users use its powerful search engine daily. That’s not counting other developments like Google Maps, YouTube, Chrome and Android. But Google has so much more in store for us. Hence, they boldly did a major corporate restructuring to prepare for future expansions beyond their core brand and business.

Alphabet Inc., whose domain is abc.xyz, is Google’s new holding company that everyone is talking about. In layman’s terms, Alphabet is simply a collection of other companies. It is still headed by the same brilliant minds behind Google. Eric Schmidt acts as Executive Chairman, Larry Page is CEO, while Sergey Brin is President.

So let’s take a look at what’s inside this new corporate entity, its current and future subsidiary companies.

G is for Google

Google is still the largest company under the new parent company, Alphabet. It is now headed by CEO Sundar Pichai. It holds Alphabet’s core business that includes Search, Ads, Maps, Apps, Chrome, YouTube and Android and all other related technical infrastructure.

V is for Verily

The research organization called Verily Life Sciences, formerly a division of Google X and formerly called Google Life Sciences, is now an independent subsidiary of Alphabet. Verily focuses its effort in using technology to advance human life and health.

C is for Calico

Calico is another independent research and development biotech company under Alphabet. It is solely focused on health, well-being and life extension projects. It aims to combat aging and age-related diseases.

VC is for Venture Capital

Alphabet has two venture capital firms under its wings. GV, formerly Google Ventures, is the venture capital investment dedicated to helping tech startups that are in the seed, venture, and growth stages. The other one is Google Capital, their late-stage growth venture capital fund. It has invested in companies in the big data, financial technology, security, and e-learning arenas.

X is for X

X is another research and development company that undertakes projects called “moonshots.” While being semi-secret, the parent company revealed that there are about a handful of projects being undertaken. The more known ones include Wing, Glass, Loon, and Google’s self-driving car.

Google was never meant to be a conventional company. It has always been at the vanguard of technological innovations. They kept betting on the future. They are funding research and development projects that are way ahead of our times and we are benefitting much from it. So it will be no surprise when they start announcing even more projects under Alphabet.
