How has BitTorrent changed over the years?

As with anything in the world, whether technological or otherwise, BitTorrent has been subject to a lot of evolution since its inception, and has a strong history that differs broadly from how we know and love BitTorrent today. How has BitTorrent changed over the years?

As with many things, BitTorrent has changed and evolved over the years, and while the core concept remains the same (the transfer of data from one point to another in short bursts), the things that you can do with it now are immense compared to how they used to be. For example, the main use of BitTorrent back in the day was file sharing, whereas now major corporations and development companies are using BitTorrent to roll out huge updates to devices on their networks. This practice is being used by games developers, to introduce patches into games, mobile phone companies, who are updating mobile software through BitTorrent updates, and so on.

One of the main differences between “old” BitTorrent practices and “new” BitTorrent practices is the sheer scale of the data that can be shared and transferred, Whereas previously it was a song here, a file there, maybe a photo or two, we can now see that huge amounts of data -such as updates – are being transferred very quickly. One could say that the major change hasn’t been with BitTorrent itself, but with the Internet in general, and what our devices and the Internet itself is now capable of.
