Creative Drone Applications You Didn’t Expect

Drones were known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles or UAVS that had military and surveillance applications. These were aircrafts that were piloted from the ground or through pre-programmed missions. However, nowadays, when we speak of drones, we refer to those we use to take aerial selfies and whatnot. As drones become more affordable and accessible, people also get more creative with their applications. For better and for worse.

Drones are known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles or UAVS that had military and surveillance applications. These were aircrafts that were piloted from the ground or through pre-programmed missions. However, nowadays, when we speak of drones, we generally refer to those we use to take aerial selfies and whatnot. As drones become more affordable and accessible, people also get more creative with their applications. For better and for worse.

Let’s take a look at the good, the bad, and the ugly applications of drones. You will surely be surprised.

PokéDrone: Pokémon Go Cheater Drone

After its release in July 2016, Pokémon Go urged many people to move their lazy a** and walk around town to chase the cute little virtual creatures. But one player decided no one will tell him what to do and “cheated” the system by attaching a phone to a drone and mirroring the screen onto his computer. A lazy but at the same time smart a**.

Drone Racing: the Next Big Sport

The first U.S. Drone Nationals was held in 2015. There are students who build their own drones and wear science-fiction eyeglasses called First Person View (FPV) goggles. These eyeglasses allow them to see the upcoming twists and turns of the racetrack while they operate the drones below on the ground. Drone racing leagues are now slowly getting traction and drawing loyal fans.

Wildlife Conservation and Management

Probably one of the smartest ways of using drones is this one from the Researchers of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). They started using drones to observe the dolphins and whales around the Hawaiian islands without disturbing them. This is a great opportunity for wildlife conservation and management. This enables organizations to study animals in their own natural habitat and in a non-invasive way.

Bonus: Dronimal, The Most Disturbing and Creepiest Drone

Did a truck just run over your cat? If you still can recognize him, take it to Bart Jansen, a guy who decided to turn his dead cat Orville into a drone back in 2012. If you bring your dead pet to him and his partner, engineer Arjen Beltman, they will make your little buddy move his tail again. Or should we say “fly.”
