If you have enjoyed our previous blog post about Edward Snowden, the computer genius who leaked classified information about global secret surveillance by the National Security Agency (NSA), then you would love this new post. If you know WikiLeaks, then you are familiar with the work of Julian Assange. But who is he really? Let’s take a look at his controversial life…

Assange, the Man

Julian Assange was born on July 3, 1971, in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. His father is John Shipton. But when Julian was a year old, he was adopted by Brett Assange after his mother, Christine H. Assange, married Brett. Julian got married when he was only 18 years old and has a son. In 1999, Julian and his wife separated. He reached a custody agreement with his wife after a protracted court battle.

Assange, the Homeless

He had a very challenging upbringing, having moved over 50 times as a child and went to 37 different schools. During his teens, his mother was apparently on the run from an abusive boyfriend. He has become accustomed to communicating with friends and colleagues with encrypted cell phones, traveling under false names and wearing disguises, and using cash instead of debit or credit cards. Today, he still has no definite home. But spends much of his time in Sweden.

Assange, the Hacker

Julian started hacking at age 16 under the name Mendax. In 2006, he founded WikiLeaks. In the first four years, he posted thousands of classified documents, including procedures manual for Camp Delta, the US detention center in Guantanamo Bay, emails from vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s Yahoo account, a video showing a US military helicopter firing on and killing two journalists and a number of Iraqi civilians in 2007.

He also leaked over 90,000 classified documents linked to the Afghanistan war and classified military documents from the Iraq war. He has released its archive of more than a quarter million US diplomatic cables and the more recent and controversial hacked emails from Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.

Assange, the Constant Controversy

Julian has surely kept himself quite busy since the explosion of WikiLeaks. He has been faced allegations of sexual assault and rape in Sweden, been granted asylum by Ecuador, released his book, “Cypherpunks: Freedom and the Future of the Internet,” accused of supporting the Trump presidential campaign, accused of doing Russia’s bidding, and gone quietly missing that many netizens started demanded proof of life.

Assange, the Films

Like Snowden, Julian has been the subject of a few documentary and Hollywood films. These titles include, “Underground: The Julian Assange Story,” “Mediastan,” “The Fifth Estate,” and “Risk.” If you are thirsting for more information, those films will surely quench it. Or probably leave you wanting for more…
