The Internet of Things

It's no secret that, while no longer new and a novelty, the Internet is still growing, and it's venturing further and further into our lives as we incorporate Internet based technology into our homes, our workplaces, and even our vehicles. As it happens, there's a name for this, the "Internet of Things." While the name isn't overly technical, it's certainly incredibly accurate! The Internet of Things is a network of physical devices that are connected over a wireless network, allowing the collection of data and information, and allowing this to be easily shared.

As it happens, there’s a name for this, the “Internet of Things.” While the name isn’t overly technical, it’s certainly incredibly accurate! The Internet of Things is a network of physical devices that are connected over a wireless network, allowing the collection of data and information, and allowing this to be easily shared.

But what is so special about the Internet of Things, and how can you incorporate it into your life?

The Internet of Things

A Definition
“The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects—devices, vehicles, buildings and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity—that enables these objects to collect and exchange data” – Internet of Things Wikipedia Page

For the most part, the “Internet of Things” is so special because it shows just how far we’ve come with regards to technology, creating new things and improving things we already had – for example, the wireless network, and the devices that are compatible with it. For many of us, the Internet of Things will make life easier on a personal level – but they’re also important at a more official level, as they allow for the collection and exchange of data that would perhaps otherwise be completely missed.

Of course, there’s a less informational aspect to the Internet of Things, and it’s this that we’ll be taking advantage of for the most part. The Internet of Things allows us to turn our lights on and off while we’re not even in the home, control our heating systems, download music from our cloud storage onto our physical devices, and then play it wireless through our vehicle’s speakers… and plenty more! The Internet of Things is still incredibly new in the world of technology; the term was only coined in 1999, by Kevin Ashton, and the expected growth of the movement is immense. Many researchers believe that by 2020; so in just four years, there will be more then fifty billion devices connected to the Internet of things. You can’t argue with the expected growth rates when it’s stated that the Internet of Things is here to stay!
