Protecting Yourself Online

If there's one thing that's either massively blown out of proportion or ignored completely when using the Internet, it's the potential threat levels. Seemingly, people either think everything is unsafe, or are completely ignorant about potential threats and think they're just fine to browse with no real consideration. Both of these are the wrong approach, really. While there are threats to consider when using the Internet, they're not all powerful, but they are present - today we're going to be talking about protecting yourself online, how you can keep your information and everything else safe and secure and how to avoid issues on your PC.

If there’s one thing that’s either massively blown out of proportion or ignored completely when using the Internet, it’s the potential threat levels. Seemingly, people either think everything is unsafe, or are completely ignorant about potential threats and think they’re just fine to browse with no real consideration. Both of these are the wrong approach, really. While there are threats to consider when using the Internet, they’re not all powerful, but they are present – today we’re going to be talking about protecting yourself online, how you can keep your information and everything else safe and secure and how to avoid issues on your PC.

Protecting Yourself Online

Invest in good antivirus software

One of the best things you can do to ensure the health of your computer and keep yourself safe while you’re online is invest in a good antivirus software. These will scan your device to detect threats, and work towards removing them completely. There are some viruses that antivirus won’t be able to remove, and for those you’ll have to visit a specialist, but for the most part a good antivirus should do the job. It might involve a monetary investment, but that’s better than having your bank details stolen!

Be aware of what you’re downloading

If you commonly download from BitTorrent and do so without really considering what you’re downloading, then you’ll need to make sure you pay more attention. Illegal file sharing websites will often be riddled with viruses, so be sure you’re scanning the things you download before installing them or opening them on your PC. We do not condone downloading from illegal file sharing websites, but if you’re going to do it, make sure you’re staying safe!

Don’t click on ambiguous links

You know the type we mean, “click this link to claim your prize!”, “Julie lost 10 pounds in 3 days with this crazy method, click here to find out how!” and the like. Unless you know the websites that these links go to are legitimate, don’t click on them! Chances are you’ll find nothing that interests you anyway, and you might find yourself with a nice virus on your computer to complete the deal. Just.. don’t do it!

Avoid “dodgy looking” websites

Similarly to the above, if a website looks a bit dodgy to you, just head off. It’s not worth it. You can download website advisors that will give you an idea whether the website you’re heading to is trustworthy or not, but definitely use your own judgement as well.
