Is Technology Set to Shrink Again?

Forgive our confusion, but what is going on with technology these days? It seems we keep going through phases of technology size. There was a time not too long ago when mobile phones went from being the size of a brick, to being absolutely tiny! While we might not be going to such extremes this time around (after all we need a decent sized display now everything is touch based!), with the recent release of the iPhone SE and the oft heard grumble of mobile devices being too large these days, is technology set to shrink again?

It seems we keep going through phases of technology size. There was a time not too long ago when mobile phones went from being the size of a brick, to being absolutely tiny! While we might not be going to such extremes this time around (after all we need a decent sized display now everything is touch based!), with the recent release of the iPhone SE and the oft heard grumble of mobile devices being too large these days, is technology set to shrink again?

It grew, now it’s shrinking?

Let’s take a look at the iPhone SE as a starting point. Since the release of the iPhone 5, Apple have been making their devices progressively bigger and bigger, finally culminating in the iPhone 6 plus and 6S Plus – but they’re turning this on its head with the release of of the iPhone SE.

The iPhone SE returns to the humble four inch display of the iPhone 4 and 4S models, albeit with a very different external finish, and incredibly different internal specifications. Although the iPhone SE is being viewed as an “entry way” into the flagship Apple mobile device range, it does this in a very different way than the 5C did. There’s no compromise here either with the outside finish, or the internal specs. The SE can easily match the 6S or even 6S+ in terms of performance and capabilities, and it has the same sleek exterior, just on a smaller scale.

While the price point of the iPhone SE was never going to be the same as an entry level Android – or even mid range – it is still slightly lower than the regular price point usually afforded to Apple mobile devices. With Apple making a move towards improving their entry level devices, just on a smaller scale, perhaps other manufacturers will soon follow suit. We could soon be seeing plenty of smaller versions of flagship devices with the same capabilities as their larger counterparts, and we think this is definitely something to keep your eyes open for.

Other devices we’ve seen shrink over the years include cameras (and of course video cameras, paying special attention to the GoPro range), media players, and even tablets in some cases.
