Until relatively recently, online security wasn’t something many people knew, or even cared about. However in this day and age where all it takes is the right know-how for unsavoury characters to gain access to all your personal information, knowing how to stay secure when you’re online is essential. As with anything, though, there are always tools that can give you a helping hand, allowing you to stay secure online without interrupting your day to day activities. With that in mind, we’ve put together a couple of suggestions for some great privacy tools to look into, to help promote your privacy and security.

Five great tools to help you stay secure online

Tor
Tor is perhaps the ultimate in anonymous browsing, bouncing your traffic through so many different relays that it won’t know whether it’s coming or going. This is good news for you, though, because it means your browsing will be nigh impossible to track, and thus, more secure. Your identity and activity are both hidden, and you can access pretty much every site (including websites that will only allow you access with Tor) anonymously.

PGP/GPG
Ah, encrypted email; perhaps the only way you’ll be keeping your emails fully private. Fortunately, it’s not too hard to do. All you need to do is make use of PGP/GPG and your emails will be encrypted, private and for your eyes only. You can use this with the email address that you already have, so there’s no need to change everything for a bit of extra security, and PGP is one of the most trusted encrypted email software providers that’s been tried and tested by the security industry.

Ghostery
Ghostery is a brilliant little browser add-on that allows you to see exactly who is tracking you at any given time (and potentially saving data on browsing habits, and so on). Ghostery can discover, and block, many many different trackers, and is a great advantage in letting you know who’s keeping an eye on your activities, and for what reasons – even if that is just browsing data for advertising!

Ad Blocker Plus
This software allows you to block ads, and therefore tracking cookies, from your browsing experience just with the simple download and install of a browser ad on. It also makes your browsing experience less annoying, since it blocks those huge ads that take up the whole page, and video ads; including those on Facebook and YouTube.

DuckDuckGo
DuckDuckGo is a completely private and secure search engine (because we know how all the big ones like to save our browsing data for later reference, don’t we?). DuckDuckGo doesn’t store your data, or your search data, making it brilliantly privacy conscious, which is a first in the world of search engines.
