Ensuring your Child’s Phone Safety

By no means are we saying that children need to have mobile phones, but as they get a little older and start venturing further afield, it's nice to have a way to quickly contact them easily and in these cases, a phone is definitely a good idea.

By no means are we saying that children need to have mobile phones, but as they get a little older and start venturing further afield, it’s nice to have a way to quickly contact them easily and in these cases, a phone is definitely a good idea.

With the capabilities of mobile devices these days, it’s important to take steps to help ensure your child is safe when using their device and today we’re going to talk about how you can go about doing that.

Ensuring your Child’s Phone Safety

Make use of parental controls
Most mobile devices have some sort of parental control system that you can use to block access to inappropriate websites and websites that may contain inappropriate content. Of course, these aren’t entirely fail safe so it will be up to you to help vet the websites that your child accesses, but it’s a good place to start!

Check up on what they’re doing
Whether you agree with checking your child’s phone or not, sometimes it’s necessary to ensure they’re staying safe. Just check through the websites they’ve been using, the apps they have installed and their contact list to ensure they’re only contacting their friends and family and not anyone they don’t know. Checking through their phone could be the difference between picking up when something’s not right and totally missing it.

Passwords
This is a bit of an umbrella, as here we’re talking about their passwords and passwords of your own. If they have a password on their device, ask to be told it to ensure you can keep an eye on what they’re doing. Additionally, password protect the app store to ensure they’re not able to download anything unsuitable for their age group – there are definitely apps better left unused!

Educate them!
You could implement all the security protocols in the world and still not ensure 100% safety by yourself, and by far the most efffective thing you can do is educating your child about staying safe when using their mobile device and the Internet on their phones.

Try not to sugarcoat it too much. Let them know that there are bad people out there (without scaring them) and let them know how important it is that they keep themselves safe, or tell you if they think something isn’t right. Knowing how to keep themselves safe gives them the best chance of doing so.
