However, not everyone has the budget for super expensive software, nor the expertise to use some of the more complicated programmes. That’s why, today, we’re talking about a bunch of different design software suitable for every level of design skill, and every budget.

Great design software for every skill level

PicMonkey

PicMonkey is a web based design software that’s incredibly easy to use. Despite its ease of use, PicMonkey is pretty versatile and you can actually get a lot done with it. They offer a lot of their functions for free, but also have an affordable subscription service for their “Royale” features which offer a bit more.

You’re never going to be able to do any large scale designing or photo editing with PicMonkey, but it’s a good starting position and fine for those who just need to crop, resize, add some text or other details and the like.

Canva

Canva is another web based design software which allows you to create various social media graphics, Kindle covers and the like with ease – it also allows you to create your own designs with custom dimensions, giving you the opportunity to create your own images. The software is primarily about branding, so is best for business use, but nonetheless is great for simple designs.

You get a free trial, and after that the service is under $13 a month.

GIMP

GIMP is free software available on both Windows and MacOS that is widely hailed as the closest alternative to PhotoShop there is, without the incredibly high price. The functionality of GIMP is very good, with the software allowing you to do virtually the same amount of things as PhotoShop does, to a similar quality. However, despite the huge number of tutorials available on the Internet, many beginners find GIMP quite difficult to use so that’s worth considering.

GIMP is free software, so well worth giving a go to see if you get on with it before making the decision to move on to more advanced software.

PhotoShop

Photoshop is the King of photo editing and design software, used by professionals and dedicated hobbyists the world over. There’s very little you can’t do with Photoshop, providing you have the patience to properly teach yourself how to use it, and you’re willing to put the work into it to develop your talent. Photoshop is expensive, but if you’re a professional designer, or someone who takes their hobbies incredibly seriously, then it’s well worth it. It’s ease of use is supposed to be better than GIMP, so even if you’ve tried that and had problems with it, you might still get on with Photoshop.
