Accounting is a necessary evil, but for some small businesses it can cause more trouble than is entirely necessary. As a result of this, there has been a number of different companies creating software to help the small business owner take care of their accounts the easy way. Today, we’re going to be taking a look at some of these offerings and letting you know whether we think they’re worth it; from the humble spreadsheet right up to the professionals, let’s dive in.

Accounting for small businesses

Spreadsheet

The humble spreadsheet is something that many of us have used to keep a track of our accounts and finances, and it’s served us well! The software is often free, the files easy to store and access on a number of devices, and more importantly it’s easy to set up and simple to use.  While the spreadsheet is absolutely fine, if you have a lot of transactions to make a note of, or do a lot of business, then you’ll likely spend a lot of time inputting data and arranging your accounts – it’s in these cases that you’ll need to consider one of the below.

Freshbooks/Crunch/Clever accounts

These services all do a similar thing; providing you with one place to go for all your accounting needs. Often, they’ll incur a small fee for using them (with the touted benefit being that you’re saving time on your accounting that you could then be using for work!), and will take care of any incoming and outgoing cash flow, give you a springboard for your invoices – with some services even offering an automatic follow up so you don’t have to chase when you haven’t been paid, and even more.

It’s worth noting that while these services will do essentially the same thing, they do function differently. Depending on your preference, the type of work that you do, the size of your business and whether you have employees, you’ll find that certain services work better for you than others. Fortunately, the majority of them offer a free trial that you can try out so you can get hands on experience before committing to a service and choosing what works for you.

The Professionals

If all else fails, or you really don’t like the idea of taking care of your accounts yourself, then approaching a professional is the best way to ensure things are done right. While accountants can be pricey, they’re worth it to ensure your returns are taken care of properly, and that everything is correct and properly accounted for.
