File sharing and downloading has been around for years, and arguably the peak of its popularity has been and gone – especially with regards to consumer downloads, since they’ve now largely been replaced by streaming services. However, many people do still choose to download their media and entertainment, and it’s those people and their downloads that we’re going to be talking about today. If you’ve ever been curious to know what the most popular types of downloads are, then you’re in the right place.

Top types of downloads

Music

Music is one of the most popular things that people download; since the creation of the MP3 file type, people found downloading music to be far more convenient than just buying the CDs and putting them in a CD player – and of course, downloading the tracks through illegal file sharing means that they were not paying for them, which was a very popular practice during the early 2000s. It’s much less popular today, with the introduction of various streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music, and even the growing popularity of YouTube, reducing the instance of music downloading.

TV and Film

Both newly released films and those that have been out for a while are commonly downloaded – both legally and illegally, and so are television shows. Particularly those that are difficult to find on streaming websites are often found downloaded, and are perhaps the second most commonly downloaded piece of media to music.

Software

Increased security measures have made it more difficult to download software illegally, but of course the vast majority of software that’s found on computers is downloaded, and legally, for that matter! This makes it technically one of the most common forms of downloads, but since it’s often not downloaded by choice (unlike music and films/TV shows), we’re putting it third on our list.

Games

There are plenty of places you can legally download games to play on PC, including big providers such as Steam and Origin and with this many options for legal downloads, games rank high on popular download lists. Of course, there are still people who try to obtain game downloads illegally, but increased software security has made this increasingly more and more difficult.

Audiobooks & eBooks

There are a huge amount of options for downloading audio books and eBooks, from Amazon and plenty of other providers. These are definitely not one of the most popular types of downloads over film and TV shows, but with the convenience of Kindles and other eReaders, downloading books and audio books has become more and more popular in the last few years.
