Illegal Downloads and Their Impact

File sharing and downloading from BitTorrent used to be a much smaller scale thing than it is today. Growth is absolutely a good thing, but unfortunately with any growth will always come a downside, and in this case, it's the appearance and popularity of illegal file sharing and downloads. While many people see this as a great way to save money when they're getting their media and entertainment, there are serious ramifications to the practice of illegal file sharing which need to be considered, both by those who share the files in the first instance, and those who download and seed the files to prolong their existence on the Internet, and allow other users to download them.

While many people see this as a great way to save money when they’re getting their media and entertainment, there are serious ramifications to the practice of illegal file sharing which need to be considered, both by those who share the files in the first instance, and those who download and seed the files to prolong their existence on the Internet, and allow other users to download them.

The Impact of Illegal Downloading and File Sharing

It’s easy to assume that the impact of illegal file sharing and downloading is purely financial, and that these financial penalties apply only to the big companies who own the media and entertainment files that are being downloaded. Unfortunately this isn’t the case. While we’re focusing only on the typical downloads of media, such as movies, music and TV shows, there can still be important penalties to you yourself that you need to consider.

These include, but are in no way limited to:

  • Financial and criminal penalties: unfortunately, if you’re caught downloading content illegally from the web, you can be both fined, have your computing equipment taken away from you, and even face time in prison in extreme cases.
  • Economic problems for the companies who own the media, and the artists who create it: This is primarily an issue in music, as movies can still make money when they’re in the cinema and TV shows from advertising; however, recording artists often make the majority of their money from their record sales and concerts, so if they’re losing some of this income due to people illegally sharing their material, it becomes a problem.
  • Security problems with your computer: While you may think that a file you’re downloading is exactly what you think it is, and clean from any viruses and spyware/malware, that might not necessarily be the case. One of the most common ways computers contract viruses etc is from downloading files that contain them – definitely think about this before making the choice to download something from a file sharing website, they can be difficult to get rid of and cause plenty of problems for you.

As you can see, there’s more to think about than initially comes to mind when it comes to illegal file sharing and downloading. However, with the rise in popularity of streaming services, and local authorities and ISPs cracking down ever harder on file sharing websites, illegal file sharing is something which is set to become a dying practice within the next few years.
